Featured Item #1- Spring 2011
Carmine
Jewel Pie Cherry:
Carmine Jewel, being
a vigorous bush cherry has two very significant advantages over
the larger tree cherries:
#1: Ease
of harvest using easy-to-build catchment, (simply shake the bushes
into the net thus eliminating the huge labor investment in harvesting.)
#2: Due to 4-5 ft size and flexible branches, its much easier to
protect from birds with plastic netting. (Typically we lose 80%
of our cherries to birds if not netted)
-- Let it ripen fully and
it will develop higher sugars than U.S. sour cherry varieties.
--Mainly a great pie cherry
--Also very high in the pigments touted to help arthritis.
--Resistance to cherry leaf spot unknown.
--Much higher yields than Crimson
Passion and much more vigorous;
also much higher survival rate in transplanting.
Dark red/purple color,
--Commercial potential on small
and large scale and perfect for pick-your-own due to ease
of harvest and bird protection.
--4 to 5 foot tall multi- stem bushes at maturity.
--Plant 4-5 feet apart with space between rows large enough for
machinery.
--Bears a few cherries in 2nd and 3rd years.; large yields in 4th
--Does very well in heavy clay soil, producing 10 to 20 pds/bush;
in ideal soil can bear up to 50 lbs/bush.
--Probably does well in light soil, as most sour cherries.
--Tissue cultured (on own roots, not grafted).
Zone
3
--Plants come small, 10"-18" but with very fibrous roots
for great survival;

zone 3, northern WI. However, this year only two items are offered:

Item #2
Crimson Passion
Cherry:
Due to 4-5 ft
size its much easier to protect from birds with plastic netting.
(Typically we lose 80% of our cherries to birds if not netted)
----This variety has more sugar than the average sweet cherry
and has a firm texture close to that of a sweet cherry however
it is hardy to zone 3! Signficant drawback is that it is a
very weak grower and survival has often been poor the first
year. You must grow this in a pampered environment, like a
garden or in a tree tube the first year!
--Resistance to cherry leaf spot unknown.
--Probably no commercial potential due to low yield.
--Plant 3-4 feet apart.
--Tissue cultured (on own roots, not grafted).
Zone 3
--Plants come small, 10"-18", in 2 1/2" pots
18.00 ea;
15.00 ea for 20-50 plants;
Add 5 dollars per tree if ordering less than
3 trees. (On entire order)
Guarantee: that
all plants are shipped out live and healthy, sorry, no replacements
for Crimson Passion, you must grow it in a garden setting
the first year to prevent losses due to its inherent weak
growth.
