Juneberries
Also called saskatoons, serviceberry, and shadblow. The plant is in the rose family (as is apple, pear, etc) and produces very early ripening blue berries that look a lot like blueberries but don't taste like them. They are sweet and juicy and a real treat on a hot June day. We often walk many blocks to raid a juneberry bush, stuffing our mouthes greedily, hard to explain what makes them so delicious, a combination of texture, sweetness, juiciness, and a hint of aroma of almond. (from the seeds that are hardly detectable in the mouth. Adaptable to heavy and light soil and extremely winter hardy, to zone 3. |
